Mozambican Refugees Respond to the Gospel

Political strife in Mozambique has resulted in thousands of refugees in southern Malawi. The refugees traveled across the Shire (Shear-A) river to Malawi via hand-made canoes. Several thousand refugees ended up in the Pangeti village (location of our first foster family). Most of the refugees are living in tents provided by UNHCR (United Nations High Commisson for Refugees).
The 3x increase in local population has resulted in some security issues for our foster family. The refugees have no food and are very hungry. Our home has been a target due to the ample food supply in the home. We added a second security guard to to protect the family.
Got lemons? Make Lemonade
Pastor Kampomo and me had a number of discussions about the challenge. I felt like the circumstances presented an opportunity rather than an obstacle. I pitched a concept to Prince of feeding and preaching the gospel to the refugees in a village that has a local church. The opportunity was:
- The refugees speak the Chichewa language
- The refugees can be discipled whislt they are in Pangeti (local church)
- The refugees will eventually return to their home villages in Mozambique
- Big opportunity to plant churches!
Pastor Kampomo jumped on the bandwagon. FWDC organized a crusade to feed and preach the gospel to sevheral thousand refugees located in Pangeti.
Matthew 9:37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.”

The crusade occurred on February 15th & 16th. Several thousand refugees showed up when they heard about the food distribution by our friends at FWDC. The team were completely overwhelmed by the crowd. They moved the maize and soy beans into a small temporary building to facilitate a somewhat orderly distribution.

Thank you donors for making the food distribution to refugees possible
Pastor Prince Kampomo preached the gospel of Jesus and invited the refugees to accept Jesus as their savior. Somewhere between 300 to 700 refugees (multiple guesstimates) responded to the gospel message. Approximately 10 refugees experienced deliverance and many were healed. The church plans to disciple the new believers over the coming weeks and months.
More to come. Watch this space.
