Orphan Shade Tutors
"An education is something they can never take away from you." Rev. Jack Schierloh
The quote above was ground into my brain by my late father, Jack Schierloh. He would let that quote fly at any convenient teaching opportunity (There were many opportunities in my case). I did listen (eventually) and finally took college seriolusly. I quickly recognized that many doors opened for me with a coillege degree.
In the Orphan Shade girls case, the advantages and opportunities associated with education are significant. In addition, the rate of girls that stay in public school is very low. The rate of girls that complete secondary school is very low (less than 20%). The data shows that many girls bail out early because:
- Required to help on the family farm
- Mother needs help from the oldest daughter with a large family
- Get married at 10 to 12 years old
- Have children at a young age
Orphan Shade is blessed with three wonderful school tutors. All three ladies are credentialed teachers who love to teach. They are:
- Ms. Margret - Pangeti
- Mrs. Thokozani Bonzo - Chipolopolo
- Mrs. Tamara Hoka - Mdeka
Ms. Margret (left) in Pangeti is a hero. She has been fundamental in the girls academic, spiritual growth and singing development. Below are a few academic data points:
- 3 of 8 girls are ranked #1 in their school year (Regina, Eliza, and Maria)
- All the girls have dramatically improved their class rankings over 2 1/2 years with Margret
- Regina tested out of Standard 6 and jumped to Standard 7
- Regina will be eligible to take the Secondary School qualification exam exam in 2026
Mrs. Thokozani Bonzo (right) in Chipolopolo is new. The previous tutor did not delivere to our expectations. Mrs. Bonzo is very motivated to push the girls to academic heights. Below are a few data points:
- Rosa (9) tested out of Standard 2 and jumped to Standard 3
- Rosa was ranked #1 in her clas
Mrs. Tamara Hoka (below) in Mdeka is also new. This family is the newest formed in June 2024. Mrs. Hoka is also highly motivated to help the girls reach academic heights. Below is a recent data point:
- Deborah (7) recently tested out of Standard 2 and jumped to Standard 3
